The girls frosh soccer team kicked off their tournament with an amazing win against South 4-1, showing off their teamwork in their second game of the season. This win capped off the tournament, and gave the girls a 2-0 start to the year.
Right from the kickoff to the very last minute, the girls excelled on the field. There was amazing communication between offense and defense, according to freshman Dylan Buchler, and they managed to keep the action off the girl’s side of the field. The energy was high and multiple shots were made on goal.
“We had good communication, we locked in and pulled through and we had a good outcome,” Buchler said.
The first goal of the game, after many efforts and failed shots on goal, was made by freshman Grayce Bullock, which immediately set the tone. Two more goals followed, made by freshman Dylan Buchler off of a penalty kick and freshman Raelynn Holland on a half-field dribble, setting the score to 3-0.
“Even after we got goals, we didn’t slack off and connected a lot of passes and communicated,” Bullock said.
As the second half began, freshman Kylie Medina scored yet another goal for Redondo, off a rebound on a corner kick, the score was now 4-0. As the game progressed, South started pushing past Redondo’s defense, making some close calls until a cross to the middle resulted in a goal, making the score 4-1.
“Obviously we still are new to each other, so the chemistry could obviously be better. We are also working on not panicking in moments of pressure,” Buchler said.
With the score at 4-1, hopes of a shutout were gone. The only thing to do was to make sure South didn’t beat the girls’ defense again, so they started to lock down on that. In the moments South managed to make it on our side of the field, the girls’ defense reset quickly to ensure there were no more close calls.
“We were all supporting each other even when we messed up,” Bullock said. “We just have to work on getting on the same page.”
At this point in the game, Redondo’s main goal was to continue to focus on defense in order to keep South from scoring further. By keeping the ball off our part of the field and regrouping on defense when South managed to get past the halfway point of the field, they prevented the Spartans from scoring.
“People were running into each other because they’re not communicating, so there were a few times that could have been better,” Buchler said.
All in all, Redondo managed to keep it up on defense, leaving the final winning score of 4-1. Although it wasn’t a shutout, the girls managed to dominate the field almost the whole game, leaving South little to no opportunities for scoring further.
“I think it will give everyone more confidence. We’ll have more skill, and I think this is a good confidence booster,” Buchler said. “Everyone will start to get on the same page and help each other out more.”
