Work hard, play hard

Boys basketball continues a winning streak with a win against St. Bernard

In one of their strongest defensive performances this season, boys basketball beat St. Bernard 74-58 on the road on Wednesday. The team’s record is now 5-2.

Though St. Bernard is a talented team with a few college commits, RUHS shut down the Vikings’ best players.

“St. Bernard [has] a good team. They have a 6’10 player who has committed to play at Long Beach State,” guard Xan Wesley said. “But we got them to foul a lot, and we stopped their best guys on defense.”

Towards the end of the second quarter, the teams began to get more physical on the court and the game started to get chippy. After two technical fouls by St. Bernard, parents and other spectators began to jaw at each other.

“They fouled a lot, but we used that to put points on the board,” Wesley said. “We can handle physicality from the other team.”

With the victory against St. Bernard, the team extended their winning streak to three games. Beginning with their game against Calabasas, the team has not lost since mid November. During the winning streak, the team set their season high in margin of victory with a 59 point dismantling of Reseda.

“We played our starters for the first two minutes, but we pulled them quickly,” Wesley said. “By the half we were up 40-2, but they are a young team, so you can’t blame them.”

The team kicks off league play with their next game against Leuzinger on Dec. 11 on the road. Leuzinger sits at 3-3, but they have lost their last three games, including their only game in the Trevor Ariza Tip Off Classic Tournament.

With Bay League coming up, the team is confident about winning this season.

“We’re very confident about league this year. I’m sure we can go 10-0,” Wesley said. “I don’t know how many years in a row, but it has been a long time that we’ve [continually] won league.”
